What is the Stalin architecture?
Architecturally, the GDR was to become an image of Stalin’s Soviet Union – complete with monumental streets and squares from which citizens were to cheer their regime. Following the USSR’s guidelines, the GDR government delegation formulated “16 principles of urban planning” that were to transform Berlin into “Little Moscow”. Schinkel and 19th-century classicism served as models, and the guiding principle was “national in form, socialist in content.” The Stalin Buildings in Berlin are a remnant of Stalinist urban planning.
What are the Stalin Buildings in Berlin?
This street has already been filmed for the hit series “The Queens Gambit” and claimed to be in Russia: Karl-Marx-Allee, formerly Stalinallee. Between Frankfurter Allee and Straußberger Platz are the so-called “Stalin Buildings”, which were also ridiculed as “workers’ palaces”. The 7 apartment blocks with up to 12 stories were built as part of the “National Reconstruction Program Berlin”. On the one hand, they were supposed to counteract the housing shortage, on the other hand, they were also supposed to underpin and impressively prove the power of the GDR and socialism: In contrast to capitalism, the GDR can offer its workers palaces to live in! The Stalin Buildings have floor plans of up to 145 square meters, have hot water and central heating, elevators, garbage chutes and bell systems. The Stalin Buildings were the first prestige project in Berlin and were built starting in February 1952. The Stalinallee at that time was made extra wide for coming parades. We know the further course of history, the peaceful revolution meant the end of the GDR. The Stalin Buildings are nowadays under monument protection and were sold to private real estate funds – otherwise the buildings could not have been renovated. So they are still habitable today and tell us about the past.
What are the peculiarities of Stalin’s Buildings?
The Stalin Buildings represent a piece of history and thanks to the renovations they are still habitable. The houses in the style of Socialist Realism and Socialist Classicism have parquet floors, stucco ceilings and double windows. From the outside, the ornamental facades, towers and columns draw the eye and explain why the style of construction was also called “confectioner’s style”. What was once mocked is now a monument and famous beyond the borders of Berlin.
