Where to find french cheese in Berlin

Posted by investabcom on August 25, 2017

For all cheese lovers out there, this little miracle made out of milk and savoir-faire is a matter of lifestyle. It has become an essential part of our everyday diet. It might not be easy to find a supplier of quality cheeses in Berlin. Here is a little overview.

Finding cheese in supermarkets

It is quite possible to find cheeses in German supermarkets. However, one might quickly be disappointed as they are often well below par, often made for export, lacking that whole too important character. Camemberts are often not maturing well & Comtés have a lackluster taste. For this reason, supermarkets are often to be avoided, except if they have a specialized selection, like in one of the following department stores

Karstadt or Galeria Kaufhof

Department stores like Karstadt or Galeria Kaufhof have sections dedicated to gourmets for Germans in search of fine food, unfortunately at higher price. Their selection of cheeses is however often very good and quite extensive.

Galeries Lafayette

The famous french department store is also represented in the German capital. You will find a small section dedicated to food on the basement level. You will find next to wine and fresh fish sections, a wonderful selection of french cheese from all over France, in all shapes and forms. Also expect higher prices there.

The most famous store in Berlin has also an extraordinary level for all epicureans on the top level. A fine selection of dishes is available with enough rooms for cheeses which you can eat on location or take away with you.

Small boutiques and cheese shops

Department stores are fine and all but there is nothing like going to a small local boutique which has a friendly atmosphere and that true passion flair. There is a small community of cheesemongers with particular attention to quality.

Les Épicuriens

A true reference since a few years in Kreuzberg, you will find Les Épicuriens in the second row on the ground floor of the Markheineke Markthalle in Bergmannkiez. We would recommend their cheese selection with oysters and a glass of white wine.

La Käserie

A newer address in Prenzlauer Berg, this boutique has an extensive selection made by two french cheese lovers. It is also possible to have lunch there with cheese plates that will wake your taste buds up.
