Who is Le Corbusier?

Le Corbusier was a Swiss-French architect and (among other things) urban planner and furniture designer. He is considered one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. He initiated a new architectural movement, his well-known concrete buildings were the beginning of the so-called Brutalism. His buildings were intended to go with the spirit of the times, to be economical and to capture broad masses. Thus they are reminiscent of machines and use materials made possible by technical progress. Central elements of his designs are the columns, roof gardens, free ground plan and façade design, as well as the long windows. However, his ideas and buildings also caused controversy time and again. Today, 17 of his buildings are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

What is the Corbusier House?

The Corbusier House, popularly known as the “Wohnmaschine” (housing machine), is a high-rise building built according to plans by architect Le Corbusier. The building is located in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Originally, the building was called “Unité d’Habitation, type Berlin” and was designed for the International Building Exhibition in 1957. Not only the name changed, but also the location – originally, the high-rise was to be realised in the Hansa quarter. The design of the Hansa quarter at that time can be interpreted as a reaction of West Berlin to the architecture in East Berlin. This can be admired today especially around Karl-Marx-Allee with its Stalin buildings. However, Corbusier’s new building could not be erected in the Hansa quarter due to its size and was thus built in the Westend district of Berlin between 1956 and 1958. Due to German building regulations, the design could not be realised 1:1, so the columns are not plastic and sculptural, but simple discs, and the ceilings are also somewhat lower than Corbusier had planned. The “Wohnmaschine” has 530 flats spread over 17 floors, which can be accessed via ten streets, as the corridors are called.

What are the special features of the Corbusier House?

The Corbusier House in Berlin has been a listed building since 1996 and, despite the changes made, symbolises Le Corbusier’s concept of architecture. The world-famous architect had the vision that buildings should only cover a small proportion of the city’s surface, so that people could also spend a lot of time in the green in the city. Through high, enormous and clear prisms – the houses – people live centred, so that you don’t see houses and hear cars in the parks. His keywords: permanence, immobility, calm, space, sky, light, serenity. This idea carries the huge residential building with 530 units, which is surrounded by a 60,000 square metre park. Le Corbusier’s unmistakable style is the use of concrete, the long windows and free design of the façades. Le Corbusier plays with colours, so the moving parts of the corridors – door leaves or bun flaps – are in a different colour on each “street”. From the “streets”, one enters the 1-5 room flats, which (except for the 1 room flats) extend over two floors. In them, the golden section has also been considered and behind the floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedroom is the idea of being able to see the sunrise as well as the sunset.
